Best Heat Pump Battle: Goodman vs Carrier Top Models

In the age old conflict for heat pump supremacy, Goodman and Carrier are no strangers to the HVAC battlefield. Both companies features energy-efficient and high quality heat pumps and both compete for dominance in the growing energy-conscious American market. Today, the Best Heat Pump Battle will be fought between the premier models from either company. Today, the Goodman DSZC18 will face down it’s arch-rival, the Carrier Infinity 25HNA9.

Whenever two heat pumps compete, energy efficiency can be key. The HVAC industry and the US Department of Energy measure heat pump efficiency via the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER. The US government mandates all new residential heat pumps and air conditioners must have at least 13 SEER and the higher the overall SEER the more efficient a heat pump is. With it’s dual-stage scroll compressor, the DSZC18 achieves an 18 SEER rating, which, in fact, is what it’s named in honor of. An 18 SEER is a respectable rating, but not the best. In this case, the Infinity Series brings in a 19 SEER rating, edging out Goodman in this crucial category.

The battle does not stop there. One of the most important parts of a purchase for the consumer isn’t just energy efficiency alone, but also, how long is this heat pump going to last me? Both Goodman and Carrier provide warranties for their systems. Carrier gives a 10-Year Limited Warranty for its Infinity Series. Here, Goodman takes the edge with a Lifetime Limited Warranty on the scroll compressor, a 10-Year Unit Replacement Limited Warranty, and a 10-Year Limited Warranty on parts.

On quality components, eco-friendly refrigerant, and available options, the two are a wash. Each comes with extensive control options like Carrier’s Infinity Control and Goodman’s ComfortNet Communications System. Both heat pumps use eco-friendly refrigerant and both have lots of upgrades for superior insulation and components. Neither takes an obvious lead.

So, which is better? Well, Carrier boasts a slightly higher SEER rating and Goodman comes with an overall better warranty package. Which is better is up to you. What do you value more: energy-efficiency or warranty? After all, in the battle of best heat pump, your decision is the only one that matters.
